WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid, Halloween was a one, two or three day event depending on how old you were.  Back then, no one worried about kids roaming the neighborhoods after dark.

Of course, all the little ones went out on Halloween dressed in their cute little costumes.  When you got a little older, you also went out the night before Halloween - not in costume - asking for pennies.  Logically, we called it penny night and some of the home owners went along with it - dropping a penny or two.  Mostly it was an excuse to horse around and hang out with your friends.

When you got to those preteen years, several nights before Halloween we roamed the neighborhoods on what we called destruction night(s).  This is when we rang doorbells and soaped car windows and lit smudge pots.  It was supposed to be a warning for homeowners that Halloween was coming and they had better be ready. These were mild samples of the tricks that awaited if they didn't come through with the treats.  It all made sense to us.

O.O
