RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

This weekend at Catholic mass we have arrived at the last Sunday before Christmas, the last of Advent.  Our readings reflect the expectant coming.

The first reading from Micah, the prophet, pinpoints where the savior would be born.  This was written many years before Jesus was born.  It names the little town of Bethlehem.  From there, this savior would shepherd the children of Israel.  How could they ignore this?

In the Gospel reading from the work of Luke, he recounts the visit paid by Mary to her cousin Elizabeth.  All signs led them to know that The Virgin carried the Messiah.  We came to find out that Elizabeth carried John the Baptist.  John spent his life preparing the people of Israel for the coming of Jesus the Christ - the one who he was not worthy to tie his sandal.

Catch this:  Jesus says in essence; no human being is as great as John the Baptist - but still, he is not nearly as great as anyone in heaven.   Heaven must be a pretty good place to be.

Prepare yourself.  The Feast of Christ is next Saturday, the 25th.
