RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

This week my choice of words is Wedding.  Of course, John's Gospel story about the wedding feast at Cana is read.  It's a story you've heard many times - Jesus provides more wine for the affair.  What could possibly be important about it that we have not heard before?

First, keep these things in mind.  Jesus was probably about 30 years old.  The occasion was not the drunken reception that you may have attended after a wedding ceremony.  Wedding feasts in those days were events that went on for days.  Traveling was arduous and difficult for many guests.  There weren't Red Roof Inns on every corner - guests stayed with family and friends.  The point of me telling you this is that Jesus didn't perform his first miracle so some partyers could do the hora or hokey-pokey.  Wine was the drink of the day - every day.  Water was not always the best.

Here are the sapient points.  *It was Jesus mother who asked him to take care of the problem for the parents of the couple.  *According to the story, Jesus, at first, was inclined to resist her request and told her so.  *She ignored his retort and told the waiters to do what he said.  *What he did was change water into wine.  *The wine was better than the wine they had been drinking.

What should we take away from the story?  *It was his First public miracle.  *He chose to do it at a Wedding.  *It was echoed by the changing of water to wine at the Last Supper.

With this miracle, he showed how obedient he was to his mother.  With this miracle, he magnified the importance of Marriage.  If you got those two items, you've got it.

Have a great weekend.  I love you.
