Let me start by saying how impressed, even shocked, I am by the response of the NATO alliance and others to the actions of Russia with respect to Ukraine. The world has considered Ukraine a legally constituted government and sovereign nation for 30 years. I never thought the European nations would react so violently; sending money, sending war materials, and penalizing Russia economically. I think it is a great show of force.
It would be easy to say that it is great for NATO that it's members have reacted this way - and everyone has. It shows the great power of working together. NATO seems to be stronger than expected. I think we should be proud.
But more than that, I think we should be considering an expansion of that group beyond the North Atlantic. Why not create a Treaty Organization that includes all countries that are willing to work together to protect the sovereignty of all member-nations; indeed, all nations? It would require that participants share costs and manpower. It would require that participants acted responsibly with it's own borders.
Is it possible? Would all members react as aggressively to an incursion into South Korea, Taiwan or the Philippines? India and Pakistan could be members if they settled their border dispute - not before. Would Japan and Australia see the value in joining in? Would others join in the protection the U.S. gives to Central and South American countries?
There are a lot of questions, to be sure. But, I have a feeling that we are seeing collectiveness flex its muscles effectively. Why not shoot for a bigger prize? Controls would be difficult but not impossible. Give peace a chance.
