QUOTES

Often chosen the best of all U.S. Presidents, Abraham Lincoln provides a wealth of information in his quotations.  Having served from 1861 through 1865 and his untimely death, he guided the country through our Civil War and brought America out of the age of Slavery. Here are some quotes, mostly from before he became president.

"I have now come to the conclusion never again to think of marrying, and for this reason;  I can never be satisfied with anyone blockheaded enough to have me."

"Any people anywhere being inclined and having the power have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government and form a new one that suits them better."

"Discourage litigation.  Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can.   Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser, ..."

"The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they cannot do, at all, or cannot, so well do, for themselves; in their separate and individual capacities."

"A house divided against itself cannot stand."  I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.

"I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists.  I believe I have no lawful right to do so and i have no inclination to do so."

"We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing."

"Truth is generally the best vindication against slander."

"I do therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States and also those who are at sea and those sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens."
