MIDWEEK PRAYER

A Novena is a group of nine prayers.  Usually a single prayer, but it could be different prayers said for the same intention for nine consecutive days.  It's an old tradition in Christianity.  I think it goes back to the eleven Apostles praying every day after Jesus had left them and ascended into Heaven.  On the tenth day, the Spirit of God infused them with the strength, courage, knowledge and ability to take Christ's word to the world.

Choose your own prayer and, of course, your own personal request.  Do it for nine consecutive days and see what happens.

There are many examples of Novena prayers on the Internet.  Here is an example. This one asks Saint Anthony of Padua to pray to God to help us.  He is a patron of the poor and things lost - among other things.  This is the first day prayer - as you can see, it is simple.  You can search for the eight following days on the Internet under Novenas..

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers.  Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me… (Mention your request here…) O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours.

Amen.
