This weekend at Catholic mass, a gospel passage will be read that is the main basis for the establishment of Christ's church. In Matthew's gospel, chapter 16, Jesus is recorded as telling Peter, in front of the other Apostles, that he would be the rock upon which His church would be built and that he could make or change things as he saw fit. Peter became the bishop of Rome. An so today, almost 2,000 years later, the Bishop of Rome is still regarded as the head of the Church on Earth.
