RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

EGO

In your everyday rock band, there are two kinds of guitars - the six string guitars which play the melody, the tune you will recognize, and four string bass guitars which play the deep, pulsating rhythm of the music.  The bass guitar is partially a musical substitute for the bass fiddle in jazz groups and drums in rock-n-roll bands.  Playing bass is usually the guy standing in back or off to the side - guitarists consider it requires a lesser level talent.  It's the left-hand-only part of playing piano.

There was a young rock band called the Quarrymen which was made up of three guys - all playing their six string guitars and singing songs they had written. They had high aspirations but the sound wasn't that good.  They looked for a drummer but couldn't find a suitable one.  They tried a bass guitarist and agreed the sound was better but they couldn't find a good one who would stick with them.

What to do?  They came upon a drummer and the problem was mostly solved.  They still needed the sound of deep strings.   Now, one of the three would have to change to a bass guitar.  None wanted to do that but the lefthander finally agreed and went out and bought a cheap bass guitar.

That group then changed their name to the Beatles and the bass guitarist was Paul McCartney.  Controlling your ego can have dramatic effects.
