We all had a blast during the recent solar eclipse. The big benefit about that sky show is that it occurred during the day. Another big show is coming - this time best seen at night.
The annual Lyrid Meteor shower is on the way. It comes every Spring. This year it can best be watched here on the nights of the 20th, 21st and 22nd.. That's this Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights. No special glasses required. A cup of black coffee might help.
The Lyrid meteor shower is basically a bunch of rocks flying around in our galaxy and colliding with the atmosphere of Earth. When the rocks hit our atmosphere, they cause what we call a shooting star to stream across the sky. They all completely burn up before they hit the ground. These rocks came from a comet or asteroid that collided with some other big rock.
It's a great sight to see. Sometimes, the best viewing is early in the morning but you should see some at any time those nights. So get out there and lift your head to the heavens. When you see one, it could be a message sent just for you. Don't miss it.
