IT'S GREEK TO ME

 English is a Romance language - the root of most words comes from the Latin language of Rome.  The Romans once occupied most of the English Isles.

We have taken words from many other languages into our every-day vocabulary.  Many of our words have roots or pieces of words in other languages like Greek.  English uses Greek prefixes for numbers in many instances.  Here are the numerical ones that you will recognize:

One = Mono
Two = Di
Three = Tri
Four = Tetra
Five = Penta
Six = Hexa
Seven = Hepta
Eight = Octa
Nine = Nona
Ten = Deca

You may recognize one of these this Sunday - it is Pentecost - the fiftieth day after Easter.  It commemorates the blessing of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and, thus, the birthday of the Church.
