RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

OOOOO LYMPICS

The Summer Olympics are on their way.   They'll be on your TV from Paris, France beginning next month.  Everyone can recognize the Olympics logo, but, can you tell me what it's all about?

This logo was adopted after the 1912 Olympic Games.  It is meant to symbolize all the continents involved in the games.

Now, in geography class we are taught that there are seven continents.   The continents are Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania (Australia, New Zealand and islands), North America, South America and Antarctica.  So, why only five rings.

In 1912, they agreed upon Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.  They were sure no one was ever going to compete from Antarctica.  Here's the kicker.  They considered North and South America as one - the Americas.  A little over one-hundred years ago, they had no respect for this half of the world.

OOOOOO how wrong they were!
