NEWS OF THE WEEK

"It's only news if it's new.  It doesn't matter any more if it's true, tainted, one-side, biased, or an outright lie."    -  -  Me

  • The Olympic games are droning on.  Those who love the games are seeing the best coverage ever.  NBC's stable of stations is giving you everything you ever wanted to see.  The USA team is doing well.   The US has by far the most medals won, followed in order by China, France and Great Britain.  China actually has the most gold medals as of Thursday.  Overall, there are 10,500 athletes competing in 339 events as part of 32 different sports.  The US has 593 athletes competing; France has 573, Australia has 460, Germany has 427, Japan has 404, Italy 403, and China 388.
  • Taylor Swift had to cancel several scheduled concerts in Europe due to safety concerns.  My son-in-law got into one of her concerts in Germany before the threat of violence waylaid shows in Austria.
  • The stock market which skyrocketed to  over 41,000 on the Dow last week, took a nose dive on the fear of oncoming inflation and recession.  It's best not to look at your investments every day unless you are an avowed day trader.
  • The Reds finished a so-so series with the Giants and traveled south to play the lowly Miami club.  They were able to win 3of 4 from the "Fish".   This weekend they play one of their in-division foes the Milwaukee Brew Crew.  The Reds are just about at the do-or-die point.  Elly and Hunter are fun to watch.
  • The Bengals continue to slave away in the Midwest heat wave in preparation for live action.  They lost to injury for the season, a reliable defensive lineman, Cam Sample, and are crossing their fingers on a receiver, Charlie Jones, who went down on the pretty new Paycor Stadium turf.  Replacement players are now receiving auditions.  Joe Burrow will sport his new hairdo on the field tonight in a preseason test against the Tampa Bay Bucs - he might even play, a little.  If for no other reason, watch the game for the new kickoff rules.  It could be exciting.
  • A hurricane named Debby dropped tons of water on Florida and states up the East Coast.  There are about three months of hurricane season still to come.  "Batten down the hatches."
