Just a note: I started with News of the Week on July 13 last year. I hope I can keep it up.
Canadian Mark Carney has replaced Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister for the duration of the term ending in October. Can't wait to see if anyone running in that election wants Canada to be our 51st state.
Syria is besieged by violence again - the fallout from the overthrow of the Assad regime. Nearly 1,000 civilians have been killed in clashes between the Muslim Shia group that Assad had favored and the new state's security forces. It may never end.
This was a big week for NFL teams - it is a period when free agents can be signed to a new team or resigned to their own. The Bengals have been a little backward in their participation. They did get a 330 pounder to sit in the center of the defensive line in hopes that teams would stop running against them with abandon. The browns made their edge rusher the highest paid non-quarterback in the league and the Bills gave their quarterback the highest guarantee ever ($250M out of $330M for six years.
Last weekend's big winner in movie theaters was "Mickey 17" - seems like it's a SciFi thriller to me but I could be wrong. The top holdover from the previous weekend was "Captain America: Brave New World." I don't get movies any more.
Most of our financial markets took a tumble this week. Volatility is the word of the day.
Threats of tariffs were on again, off again, on again, etc. Most of the current infighting this week had to do with the Department of Education. Will they ever learn.
Russia seems to be having some military success in Ukraine and that might be what is pushing all to have a pow-wow about ending the war. Let's hope.
Michelle Obama and her brother, former college basketball coach Craig Robinson, have launched a podcast. I think it will be called IMO.
The blood moon appeared last night in our area. It changed colors as it was going through a total eclipse - that has to do with the sun shining on the moon through Earth's atmosphere.
Doctors have successfully place a titanium (all metal) heart in patients who were awaiting a heart transplant. This could be big but I don't know if I could dance with a hard heart.
A government shutdown was averted yesterday when most senators agreed it would be a bad thing.
SpaceX sent up their Crew-10 on Friday for a rendezvous with the International Space Station. Two American women (the pilot and commander) and two men (one Japanese and one Russian). They should catch up to the ISS by tomorrow.
Violent storms are forecasted for today in the Midwest and South. Look out.
