FIREFLIES

 All kids love fireflies - lightning bugs, if you live in my part of the world.  They are amazing.  Living in southwest Ohio, I've always enjoyed them.  

I didn't realize until I had kids living in Florida that everyone didn't have them.  I felt sorry for Floridians.  Well, the other day I saw a map that someone put together that showed the density of fireflies around the world.  The only real dense populations are in central United States.  I had no idea.  

We are so lucky.  Hot summer nights can be magical. Sadly, the habitat for fireflies is shrinking. 

Go out tonight and catch one in a glass jar, poke holes in the lid, throw in a piece of grass or two, take it into the house and set the jar on your dresser.  Watch it blink through the night as you are falling asleep.  Now, think that it is looking for a mate with that flash of light.  How romantic!  In the morning, it will be dead as a doornail.
