Proverbs have always interested me. It's hard to pin down exactly what a proverb is. In general, they are cute little sayings, often wise observations of the world. Some people are good at it; some people have a pocket full of them. I just marvel at the wisdom.
The Bible has a whole book with that name. The Book of Proverbs is attributed to Solomon, the son of King David. He had great wisdom as demonstrated when he was offered anything in the world he wanted and he chose "wisdom"!
Most proverbs seem to come from ancient peoples (that might be because wisdom is scarce these days). You've heard people say "old Chinese proverb" or "old Indian proverb" or, well, you get the picture.
I came across one that reinvigorated my interest. It has political tones. Here it is.
"The forest was shrinking but the trees kept voting for the axe. The axe was clever and convinced the trees that since his handle was made of wood, he was one of them." Old Turkish proverb.
