Yesterday or the day before, we reached the Winter Solstice. It marks the beginning of Winter. The tilt of the Earth has put the Sun at it's furthest from us for the year. Each day now, but slowly at first, it will seem to move a little closer to us in the Northern Hemisphere. What does all that mean? Well, the next three months or so will be cold - but progressively warmer. As for sunlight, yesterday was the shortest day of the year for us in terms of sunlight.
All that I knew but I never guessed how different the amount of sunlight could be for all of us in these great states. Here in southwestern Ohio, our sunlight (sunrise to sunset) ranged from about 7:54 am to 5:15 pm. last weekend. That is 9 hours and 21 minutes of beautiful sunlight.
A quick check on my phone showed me that central Florida, where I visit, had sunrise to sunset times of 7:17 am to 5:40 pm. They have 10 hours and 23 minutes of sunlight. I thought it amazing that they get about an hour more of sunlight than we do. It's not only warmer there, but more sunshine, too.
Now, a check of North Dakota where one of my grandsons lives, shows a 8:32 am sunrise and a 4:53 pm sunset. Wow! They only have 8 hours and 21 minutes of sunlight right now. How dismal. An hour less than here.
Be happy! Get out into the sunlight as often as possible. When it's overcast, take your vitamin D3.
