A picture is worth a thousand words.
That old cliche has been recently proven to be so true.
In the case of the pro football players, Rice and Peterson, pictures seem to make the difference. These are not the only people in this country to have committed these crimes. Video of a left hook and photos of a welted child turned the country into rage. The media went into a feeding frenzy on them and their employer, the NFL, demanding heads roll. If we had not the pictures, would the rage have been the same?
In the case of ISIL, photos of a captured American kneeling before his captor and just the knowledge that videos of his beheading exist, turned the country into rage. Two people being beheaded has caused greater rage than hundreds killed and maimed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and by suicide bombers elsewhere. If we had not the pictures, would the rage have been the same?
Lesson for today: If you want to teach something to a person or group, use visual aids. Contact as many of their senses as you can. Words by themselves get lost.
