ARMY-NAVY FOOTBALL GAME

ARMY-NAVY FOOTBALL GAME

My daughter, son-in-law and their family attended the Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia last Saturday. To their delight, Navy won the game 26-14.

65 years ago today, the game was also played in Philadelphia and Navy won 14-6. During that game on a sunny Saturday afternoon, word filtered into the stadium that something very serious was happening almost half-way around the world. Top military brass was being called away to more urgent matters. It was 7 am in Hawaii when the game started and just before that, hell rained out of the sky. The Imperial Japanese Navy, having estimated that it could deal our fleet and air force such a blow that we would not be able to carry on a war in the Pacific, attacked us at Pearl Harbor and brought us into World War II.

Like football, the game of war is not won or lost in the first quarter. Go Navy!
