CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

On Monday night, we saw the Dolphins lose to the Jets and further dash our hopes for the Bengals. The NFL playoffs seem pretty remote.

Wednesday night, the UC Bearcats played a traditional rival in the Miami University Redhawks. They faced off downtown at the US Bank Arena. Mid-way through the first half, Cincinnati had a run that took them to a 9-point lead at half time. The Cats stretched the lead to 13 early in the second half but the Redhawks put on a run of their own to draw the game even with twelve minutes to go. It was back and forth until about 2 minutes remained when the Bearcats scored 8 in a row to win 60-52. Marcus Sikes led Cincinnati with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jamual Warren also had 15 points including 5 in the last minute.

The Bengals' Rich Braham announced his retirement. It seem the "deep knee bruise" we were hoping the center would recover from before the end of the season was actually a fractured/crushed tibia. We will miss him.

On Friday night, the Musketeers of Xavier played the Fighting Illini of Illinois at US Bank Arena and won 65-59. XU had trailed 26-25 at the half but pulled away to comfortable double digit lead in the scond behind the slick play of Drew Lavender who had a season high 17 points. However, the Muskies tried to make it close at the end with some silly fouls in the final seconds. Sean Miller's gang had 26 free throws made to 5 for Illinois.

Fenwick (3-4) beat Edgewood 48-44 on Friday night. Mariemont (5-1) traveled to New Richmond and won in a real low scoring affair, 34-20. Hamilton High won one and lost one in a holiday tournament this weekend to go to 5-3. Wilmington won two to go to 7-1.

Saturday evening, the UC Bearcats traveled to Cleveland to play Ohio University at Quicken Loans Arena and lost 79-66. The Bobcats took an early lead from the Bearcats and never relinquished it. Cincinnati could never sustain anything good they were doing especially on the defensive end. Ohio had 30 free throws made to 12 for UC.

The Bengals, hanging onto a slim chance of a playoff birth, melted in front of last year's Super Bowl champs on a warm and wet New Years Eve afternoon and lost in overtime 23-17. Not much needs to be said except that we just aren't tough enough. Coulda; woulda; shoulda!

Well, it's time to think of baseball. The Reds announced that pitchers and catchers report for spring training on February 17th.
