CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK
Wednesday night, Xavier traveled to Pittsburgh to meet the Duquesne Dukes and were upset in a heartbreaker by a 93-91 score. The Musketeers (15-7) overcame a 19 point deficit in the second half and 21 turnovers to tie the game at 91. They then allowed a basket off a baseline inbound pass and couldn't score in the last 21 seconds. The Dukes (8-11) played a helter skelter brand of ball that had XU stumped for most of the game.
Cincinnati hosted Big East rival Louisville at Fifth Third Bank Arena on Wednesday night and were not able to handle the Cardinals in a 69-53 loss. U of L (16-6) pulled away midway through the first half and the Bearcats (10-11) were really never in it after that. Amazingly, the offensive-challenged Bearcats put only four players on the scoreboard.
Chad Johnson is in his hometown of Miami, Florida this week for the Super Bowl. He set a record this week by being on every sports talk show in the country that broadcast from there. Chad never met a microphone he didn't like. Of course, while he was there the police asked him a few questions about his friend who was murdered.
Mariemont High School continued their spin with two close loses this week. Fenwick also lost two. Hamilton High (12-5) won their two games this week. Winton Woods split two games to go to 11-6. Wilmington also split two and is now 13-5.
Saturday afternoon saw the Musketeers face off against the Charlotte 49ers and completely dominate the game 91-57. The back court of Drew Lavender and Stanley Burrell did the trick for XU scoring 31 and 25 respectively. Justin Doellman went down early in this one with a sprained ankle. He and Josh Duncan, who is still out with a sprained ankle of his own, will be sorely missed down the stretch if they don't recover.
Sunday at noon, the Bearcats hosted the Red Storm of St. Johns University at Fifth Third Arena and lost 73-64. UC was about even on the rebounds and had only half of the turnovers that their Big East opponent had and still lost because they shot so poorly. Without a hot shooting day, the Cats have little chance against any decent team.
