HORSES

A lot of things about horses amaze me. A lot of things about horses scare me, too. One of the more interesting things about horses in the Americas is that there were none here as late as 1492. All horses in North America were brought here by Europeans. The first were brought by the Conquistadors. What this means is that the Indians had no horses when Columbus and his friends landed here. Its so hard to imagine the Indians living in this country without horses. How did they get around? Most of the movies that depict American Indians are placed in the 19th century. So, in three hundred years, the horse changed everything about how Indians lived and survived. Think now that we have had the automobile for only a little over one hundred years and it is not so amazing.
