After a day off on Monday, the Reds learned that starting catcher David Ross had to be put on the disabled list with a concussion he received in a collision in Sunday's game. They were in Chicago Tuesday night going up against their best pitcher, Carlos Zambrano. Aaron Harang was on the mound for the Reds and got the 6-5 win. The Reds had 16 hits and the Cubs only 5.
St. Xavier has been named by two prep magazines the preseason number 1 high school football team in the country. They will appear on ESPN on September 2nd at noon against Maryland DeMatha High School.
On Wednesday night, the Reds sent Phil Dumatrait to the mound and, after a long rain delay, found themselves in a slugfest. Dumatrait gave up five runs in two innings and his replacement Victor Santos gave up four more in the next 2-2/3 innings. The Reds got home runs from Jeff Conine, Adam Dunn, Ryan Jorgensen (his first major league hit) and Josh Hamilton with the game winner, a pinch hit two-run job. The last four Reds pitchers shut out the Cubs for the final 4-1/3 innings. Bill Bray got the win.
On Thursday afternoon, the Reds sent Bobby Livingston to the mound with the hope of sweeping the Cubs. Livingston pitched five innings and gave up five runs. He left with the Reds down 5-4. The relief corp gave up seven runs in the seventh and our boys got blown out 12-4. Adam Dunn hit his 32nd home run of the year.
The UC Bearcat basketball team announced the verbal commitment of Cashmere Wright from Savannah, Georgia for the 2008 school year. He is ranked by Rivals.com as the number 11 senior point guard in the country.
On Friday, Cincinnati went into Milwaukee trying to spoil the Brewer's weekend and knock them out of first in the division. Bronson Arroyo pitched and hit the Reds to a 8-3 victory. Dunn hit another homer and Hatteberg hit his 10th.
On Saturday evening, the Reds lost to the Brewers 8-4. Each team had 12 hits. The Reds brought up Elizardo Ramirez from the minors to start. He didn't do too bad, allowing three runs in five innings. The relievers gave up five runs in three innings... 'nough said.
The Bengals played their second preseason game of the year, facing off against the New Orleans Saints at Paul Brown Stadium. Palmer played into the second quarter and couldn't produce a touchdown. There's nothing to get too excited about either way. These games are stupid.
On Sunday afternoon, the Reds won 7-6 and made a great comeback from being down 5-0. Aaron Harang pitched and gave up the home run ball for the second game in a row. Adam Dunn hit his 34th and Brandon Phillips his 22nd home run. The big blow was by Javier Valentin, a pinch hit double to knock in the go ahead runs in the eighth. Jeff Keppinger had three hits and is hitting an amazing .368. The Reds finished the week at 54-69 and in fifth place in their division, 9-1/2 games behind the Cubs. Oh, boy!
The West Siders of Hamilton, Ohio, the Little League team representing the Great Lakes area in the World Series tournament, lost a heartbreaker on Friday and won in a blow-out on Saturday. If they win their next game on Monday, they will go on to the next round. If not, they are done.
