Can you believe its been six years? Who thought we would go six years without another incident? Are we winning or are we losing the War on Terrorism that was declared on this date in 2001?
We won the cold war with the Soviet Union because they couldn't keep up with us in the arms race and spent themselves into bankruptcy. The Soviet Union collapsed without us firing a shot.
Are the Islamic Terrorists forcing us to spend ourselves into bankruptcy? Not only are we spending huge amounts related to the war in Iraq, but also for security in our airports, sea terminals and borders. They have forced us to add another layer of fat to our already obese government, the Department of Homeland Security. Every American will be paying these costs through higher taxes for years to come.
Americans are paying three times more for gasoline than we did six years ago. The costs associated with higher gasoline prices are also raising the price of everything we buy. These increases cannot be wholly related to our struggle in the Middle East but it is a contributor to some degree.
Not only are we giving away our wealth in this fight but we are giving away our freedoms as well. Our desperation for total security is pushing us further and further down this slippery path. In the long run, this will hurt us more than the money we spend.
