WALK-BEHIND MOWERS

One of the positives about walking behind a mower to cut the grass is that you get to know every nook and cranny in the yard and each is a memory. I've been cutting the same grass for 35 straight years. For five or ten years I used a riding mower but its not quite the same. I'm glad I'm walking again. When I get old, I may have to go back to riding. You just can't see it all as well. Like the slight depression in the back right corner of the yard which reminds me that there was a large above-ground swimming pool there when we moved in; the rough area in front where a tree once stood and the stump removed; the little hump in the back left corner where I buried the cat; the little depression in the hill in the back which held a box that someone used for target practice; the slightly low area above the sewer line that I put in some 20 years ago. Gone is any trace of the old swing set I struggled to keep in place for most of the 70's, the wooden fence along the east side of the back yard, the small above ground pool we eventually put up and the patch of Shasta daisies I grew from seed in the same spot when we took it down. Now, its just me and the moles and, sadly, the moles are winning.

I can imagine every spot in the yard perfectly. And this blog made me homesick.
