CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

On Tuesday, the Bengals hired Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator. Zimmer was D coordinator for Atlanta last year and for Dallas the seven prior years.

The UC Bearcats went to Notre Dame and tried to break their 30 game home winning streak. Cincinnati led by seven at the half but fell apart after five minutes in the second period and lost 91-74. The Cats had six more baskets than the Irish but 26 less free throws. Wow!

On Wednesday, the Reds 'brass' was in Arizona getting a pitch about moving there for spring training in '09 and thereafter. They can't be serious!

The XU Musketeers went to Philadelphia to play the Temple Owls who are without John Chaney on the bench for the first time that I can remember. The Muskies ran into a buzz saw and lost 78-59. Its hard to win on the road in almost every league in the country.

In prep boys basketball, Fenwick is now 1-11; Hamilton is 3-12; and Wilmington is 12-3. Moeller is ranked #1 in the city and state. Lakota West is ranked #1 in the state in girls basketball.

On Saturday afternoon at the 'Shoe', the Bearcats played the Pitt Panthers ranked number 16 in the country. Cincinnati fought tooth and nail with their injured Big East foe and managed to pull away late in the second half only to have Pitt close to within a basket at the end. Freshman Rashad Bishop blocked a 3-point attempt at the buzzer to preserve the victory, 62-59. UC is now 9-9 and 4-2 in the conference.

On Saturday evening, Xavier was in the Nation's Capitol to play George Washington. The Musketeers earned a hard fought victory over the Colonials, 74-66, by putting four men in double figures. XU is now 15-4 on the year and 3-1 in the A-10.
