THE OUTLAW

The famous Howard Hughes produced and directed a movie in 1941 called The Outlaw. In it, he featured an unknown starlet named Jane Russell.

The film was considered too lewd for its time. The movie didn't have general release until 1946. The theatrical release poster, which all movies used as advertisement, showed a braless Miss Russell holding a gun, laying on a bed of straw, with her blouse unbuttoned and falling off of her shoulders. The movie reached some success probably as a backlash against those who wouldn't let it be shown when it was first completed. By many accounts, it is a terrible motion picture. This black and white film was colorized last year for re-release.

The most redeeming facet of the picture is what Howard Hughes, who was an aeronautical engineer, did in the way of wardrobing. For the film, he invented and designed the first push-up bra. Miss Russell wore it during the filming. To some degree, he did mankind a huge favor, not to mention what he did for little girls.
