CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

There were no games until Thursday this week, when Xavier visited St. Louis to play Rick Majerus' Billikens. Josh Duncan had 15 points and Derrick Brown had nine big rebounds and the buzzer-beater tip-in to help the Muskies edge their A10 foes by a 70-68 score. Xavier led most of the way but couldn't put St. Louis away until the last second.

In Cincinnati prep basketball, Fenwick now has a 2-18 record; McNicholas is 7-13; Hamilton is now 4-16 and Wilmington is 16-4.

Saturday evening, the UC Bearcats were in New Jersey to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and it took overtime for the Cats to put the game away 72-68. Deonta Vaughn was held scoreless in the first half and had only 6 points and no 3-pointers when regulation ended at 56 all. He then scored 13 in overtime including the first 9 points to take the suspense out of the game. John Williamson had a season high 22 points to lead Cincinnati.

On Sunday at noon, the Xavier Musketeers hosted St. Joseph's of Pennsylvania at the Cintas Center with Jack Dupps on the mop at one end of the arena. XU led the number two team in the league by as many as 14 in the first half and finished it up nine. The Hawks quickly took the advantage in the second half and held a small lead until the last two minutes when the tussle went back and forth. The Muskies scored tha last eight points in the game and won 76-72. Stanley Burrell scored 16 to lead Xavier including two free throws at the end to clinch it.
