RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

Dusty Baker is slow to cut anyone. The Reds still have about fifty players in spring training camp - twice the number they can carry during the season.

The UC Bearcats got into the first-ever College Basketball Invitational Tournament and had to travel to Peoria, Illinois to play the Bradley Braves. The Cats committed 20 turnovers and again exposed their inept offense on their way to a 70-67 loss. Deonta Vaughn had 23 points. The season is now, I hope, finally over.

Xavier met Georgia, the unlikely SEC tournament champions, in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Washington, DC. The Bulldogs carried their late season success into the game and had the Muskies on their heels in the first half and into the second. Midway through the second half, XU got it going and started making plays and making shots or maybe Georgia just ran out of gas, I don't know. In the end, the Cincinnatians won 71-63 with Josh Duncan having 20 points and 8 rebounds and Derrick Brown 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Reds decided to send Jay Bruce, last year's minor league player of the year, back to the minors for more seasoning. It doesn't seem like you should need more seasoning if you are the best player in all the minor leagues...No one is saying it but it appears that rookies Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez will be part of the starting rotation when the season begins. That would be very exciting ... and very dangerous.

The Bengals signed free-agent linebacker Brandon Johnson. No big deal, he was a special teams player for Arizona last year... In other nonsense, Chad Johnson AND T.J. Houshmandzadeh announced they will not attend non-mandatory workouts and mini-camps this Spring... The Colts did not reclaim Ben Utecht so the tight end now belongs to the Bengals. At least Carson will have someone to throw it to during camp.

Xavier met Purdue in the second round of the tournament and played a solid game after a slow start. Purdue fought them to the end but the Musketeers held on for a 85-78 win and a trip to the "sweet 16" against Bob Huggins' West Virginia team. C.J. Anderson and Drew Lavender each had 18 points for the Muskies.
