CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Reds went to Philadelphia with high hopes after their successful homestand. Speculation about when Ken Griffey Jr would hit his 600th home run abounded. Griff took off three of the four games in Philly because of a sore knee and the Reds' bats took off all four. Only an outstanding outing by Edinson Volquez brought them a victory. Down to south Florida they went for four games ending today. They won only the first of the three and finished the week with 2 wins and five loses. They now stand 30 and 34 in fifth place in their division, 9 games behind the Cubs. Aaron Harang is an amazing 2-9 on the year.

Sports Illustrated is reporting that Odell Thurman failed another drug test. That explains a lot. Chad Johnson was quoted in an ESPN The Magazine article that he would play with the Bengals this year. Let the backpedaling begin. He said, "I may be crazy but I'm not stupid." I have a real problem with that remark. He is acting as the editor-in-chief of ESPN The Magazine for the annual 'Revenge of the Jocks' issue. Can he read?

On Thursday night, the Cincinnati Cyclones brought the first professional championship to the Queen City since 1990. The Clones won the Kelly Cup with a 3-1 stomping of the Las Vegas Wranglers for the International League title.

UC had its most successful baseball season ever and I was heartbroken that they were passed over for the NCAA tournament going on now. On Thursday and Friday, in the major league draft, four of their players were selected (2 by the Cubs and 2 by the Twins). That's as many as any school.

Both Moeller and Lakota West lost in the state semifinals. Badin went on to the finals but also lost. No state champs from this area in boys baseball.
