MELONS

Melons are a great food. I love watermelon, as well as cantelope and sugar melon. Did you know that melons are a luxury item in Japan? They are often given as presents. I had no idea.

Last week, a jumbo black watermelon was sold at auction in Tokyo for $6,100.00. It was a Densuke, a variety grown only on the island of Hokkaido. The standard retail selling price in a Japanese supermarket for this type of watermelon is $188 to $283. Yikes!

Last month a pair of cantelope sold for $23,500.00. These people are crazy. Someone call Cincinnati's Jungle Jim!
