RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The big news this week was the trading of Ken Griffey Jr. It brought very mixed feelings from the community. Let's move forward, folks.

The Bengals opened camp with a bang on Monday. New free-agent acquisition, defensive end Antwan Odom badly sprained a foot and has been put on the shelf. Mad Chad is limping around with the remnants of his ankle operation (it was scoped for floating bone fragments). He's supposed to be ready for opening day. DeDe Dorsey has a (dreaded) groin injury. T.J. and Rudi both sat out the mock scrimmage on Saturday. New defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has changed the look of things on that side of the ball. There is reason for hope! Sadly, first round pick Keith Rivers has still not signed and is not in camp.

The UC Bearcat football team was ranked fifth in the Big East by its coaches. Last year they were picked seventh and finished tied for first. The preseason top 25 national coaches poll was released this week and UC was absent even though they finished at number seventeen last year. The Cats could be in the picture very Sooner. They play number 4 Oklahoma in week two. We may have the Sooners asking to buy their way out of a visit here next year like the chicken Buckeyes have.

The Reds began the week with three in Houston. The lowly Astros took the first two and the Reds salvaged the third. Griffey hit a homer in his last Red's game and Dunn hit two to take the major league lead. On to the Nation's Capitol the Reds went to play the lowly Nationals over the weekend. The Reds blew all three games there. Who's lowly now? After going 1 and 5 for the week, the hometown crew is firmly entrenched in last place in the division.

Ohio high school football teams are in the midst of 'two-a-days'. A 'fun' time these guys will never forget.
