JACK

A jack is the flag flown on the bow of a ship when moored or in harbor representing the ship's nationality. The U.S. Navy has a jack staff for that purpose on each ship. Until 2002, our Navy flew what was referred to as the Union Jack. It was an all blue flag with 50 white stars. This style of jack was used by the Navy since June 14, 1777.

As of September 11, 2002, Navy Commanders have flown what is referred to as the First Navy Jack. It is a flag of white and red horizontal stripes with a rattlesnake prominent across the middle and the words "DONT TREAD ON ME" across the bottom.

Understand that the rattlesnake is a creature that will not strike you unless you provoke it. Further understand that, with its rattle, it will warn those who threaten it. Of course, you are also aware that its strike can be deadly. I love this symbolism.
