CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Bengals started the week off with bad news. Rookie first round draft choice linebacker Keith Rivers is out for the season. He sustained a broken jaw early in the Steelers game on a block by smiley Heinz Ward.

The UC basketball program took a severe blow this week. Freshman point guard Cashmere Wright suffered a torn ACL in practice and will be sidelined for a year. The ultra-quick Wright was slated to start.

In high school football, Mariemont (2-8) walloped Deer Park, Badin skunked Fenwick (3-7), Hamilton (7-3) smashed Fairfield, Turpin beat Wilmington (3-7) and Carroll shut out McNicholas (3-7). Thus ends the regular season.

Moeller beat St. Xavier 17-14 for the final spot in the state playoffs Saturday night before a regional TV audience. Moe won on a 23-yard field goal with less than 2 minutes to play following an interception. Amazingly, St. X (last years Ohio state champion) beat two of the top ten teams in the country but finished the season 4-6 with no wins in the Cincinnati Catholic League.

The Fenwick boys soccer team lost to Seven Hills in the state district finals.

It is now being reported that Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer will probably have season-ending elbow surgery and be out for at least a year.

The UC football Bearcats were welcomed at the University of Connecticut on their homecoming day game and were treated like a date your mother had arranged for you. They danced together at the beginning of the game but, as time wore on, UConn played like the Cats weren't even there. It ended with a 40-16 score. Tony Pike started and UC led at the half but he took a blow to his broken left arm and had to sit out the second half. His replacement, young Chazz Anderson, played like a freshman when the going got tough and it was all over.

The pitiful Bengals were in Houston on Sunday and it could have been homecoming there, too. The Texans treated the Cincinnatians worse than an unwanted date. Final 35-6. Meet Owen Date.

EX-CINCINNATIANS, STACEY AND SCOT FUHRMAN RAN A HALF-MARATHON IN FLORIDA ON SUNDAY. STACEY FINISHED THE 13.2 MILES IN 2 HOURS 14 MINUTES AND SCOT DID IT IN 1 HOUR 55 MINUTES. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!
