Did I hear you say, "what the heck is Paricutin?" Well, Paricutin is a volcano in Mexico that sprang to life in 1943. The world got its first look at the birth of a volcano when it erupted in a cornfield to the amazement of local farmers in the nearby town of Paricutin. Within one year the cone had grown to a height of 1,100 feet. The eruptions and lava flow continued for 10 years. The total height of the cone is now 1,345 feet and the mountain covers 10 square miles. The flow ingulfed Paricutin and the nearby town of San Juan Parangaricutiro.
