RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

Xavier had a game on Wednesday. They took care of Auburn at Cintas Center without playing their best. The 81-74 final doesn't tell the story of how much XU dominated in the early going (they led by 22 at one point) but it does give a hint of how poorly they played in the second half. B.J. Raymond had a career game scoring 32 while pulling down 6 boards. The 14th ranked Muskies are now 7-0. They have a game Wednesday against Ohio and then the Crosstown Shootout.

UC punter, Kevin Huber, was named to the American Football Coaches Association All-American Team. UC has a NCAA best net average of over 40 yards on his punts. That's good!

The UC basketball team entertained UAB on Saturday at noon. The Bearcats methodical half-court offense was a stark contrast to the Blazers run and gun style. Cincinnati held on for the 87-80 victory. Deonta Vaughn had 16 points off the bench to lead the Cats (7-1) and his cousin, Robert Vaden, had 23 points for the Blazers (5-3).

Saturday night in Honolulu, the Bearcat football team fought the Hawaii Warriors to the end and came out with a 29-24 win. The Cats had to score 19 straight in the fourth quarter to pull this one off. Top receiver, Dominick Goodman, separated his shoulder on the first play from scrimmage and was lost for the game. Quarterback Tony Pike was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter and Dustin Grutza led the winning drives. No. 13 Cincinnati finished the season at 11-2 and Hawaii (7-6) will play Notre Dame in the Hawaian Bowl.

The Bengals were supposed to play on Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis but its difficult to call what they did 'playing' in the NFL sense. The Colts laughed their way to a 35-3 win as Bengal fans sat in the new dome with bags over their heads. What HAVE we come to?

On Sunday night the BCS announced the football bowl pairings. The Bearcats ended up with the Orange Bowl on January 1st against the ACC champion Virginia Tech Hokies.
