The second high school play I acted in was a Lerner and Loewe musical called Brigadoon. It is a fantasy about a couple of guys from New York who go hunting in Scotland and stumble upon the town of Brigadoon. Its a love story . . . a story of love lost and love regained. I aptly played the father (Andrew MacLaren) of two daughters; one of which was about to be married.
The Broadway production of the play opened in 1947. A movie was produced in 1954 and a made-for-TV version ran in 1966. A Broadway revival was scheduled to open this spring but because of the present economic downturn, it has been delayed indefinitely.
One of the first songs from the play is called The Heather on the Hill. My daughter went to a nearby hillside to collect heather for the wedding. It is a beautiful aromatic shrub that grows wild in the highlands. It is the dominant plant in European heath and moor locales and is especially suited for grazing. In North America, it is used as an ornamental shrub.
Oh, Heather, where are you?
