On this date in 1946, the Basketball Association of America (BAA) was formed. Three years later, it merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The following current teams were in the BAA: Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Philadelphia Warriors (this team has since moved to Oakland [Golden State]), Minneapolis Lakers (this team has since moved to Los Angeles), Fort Wayne Pistons (this team has since moved to Detroit), and the Rochester Royals (this team has since moved to Cincinnati and then to Kansas City and then to Sacramento [Kings]).
The NBA is now, at last, in the midst of the final round of its playoffs for this season. The last champions of the BAA were the Lakers!
