Here's an interesting fact I recently learned on a day off work.
On average, one quarter of your total life's health care cost us used up in end-of-life care. I think what this means is if you live 80 years, those last two or three years will cost as much as 27 other years of your life.
If we are going to save money on health care in this country, we should look to saving money in end-of-life care because that's where we can get the most bang for our buck. Right? Well, not if you are old . . . not if you plan on getting old . . . not if you care about the elderly. No matter, this is what the present health care reform proposals embody.
How is this for an answer to the problem? It would be so convenient if everyone died suddenly. The massive fatal heart attack coming without warning seems like such a blessing. . . to almost everyone. Maybe the government should promote smoking! Maybe the government should outlaw jogging. Maybe the government should dictate that all food should include saturated fat.
Maybe I should keep working.
