For those of you who are landlubbers like me and often strain to remember which side of a ship is port and which is starboard, here is a tip so you can impress your friends . . . facing forward just say left or right and forget that fancy sailor talk.
I can find no really good reason for these names. We all know what a port is and its only on the left side of a ship about half the time. Starboard has nothing to do with stars or boards. The root of this word tells us that this is the steering side of the ship. Anyway, you can forget all this stuff. One thing you should remember is that lubber means clumsy, stupid lout...so don't put up with some pretentious salt calling you a landlubber.
