RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Bengals opened the week by cutting J.T.O'Sullivan, the back-up quarterback. That means that Jordan Palmer is now backing up his big bro.

The UC Bearcat basketball team played a series of games in Canada and looked especially good.

The Reds opened the week with four in Denver against the Rockies. DISASTER! I hope we don't meet Colorado in the playoffs. The outfield is down to three healthy players all of a sudden. The pitchers can't pitch and the hitters can't hit. The only bright spot is the 'Cuban Missile', Aroldis Chapman. Luckily the Cardinals are also in a funk.

High school scores:

Colerain (1) 34-7 over DuPont Manual Kentucky

Moeller (2) 51-14 over Northmont

LaSalle (3) 50-21 over Lakota East

Middletown (4) 49-14 over Lima Senior

Trinity, KY 22-20 over Elder (5)

Hamilton (8) 30-14 over Taft

Fenwick 33-24 over Valley View

McNicholas 48-0 over Medway (Canada)

The Pittsburgh Pirates were waiting for the Reds when they got home. They played the us tough but don't have what it takes to close out games. The Reds won two out of three and extended their lead in the division to six games. The third game was blown by Coco - again. Their magic number for winning the division is 15. Any combination of Reds wins and Cardinal losses equaling 15 puts the Reds over the top. They each have 19 games to play.

On Saturday morning, five-year-old Lucy Lysaght played her first soccer game for the Mariemont professional six-year-olds and acquitted herself well including a scoreless quarter as goal keeper.

The very talented Fenwick High freshman football team defeated Moeller 24-20 Saturday afternoon to complete a sweep by the school in weekend action.

On Saturday afternoon, the UC Bearcat football team hosted division II Indiana State University. UC won but didn't look impressive doing it until the third quarter. At this point, this is not a UC team that can win in the Big East.

Pete Rose was honored Saturday night at the ball park on the anniversary of his 4,192nd hit which broke the major league record. He was on the field in Cincinnati for the first time in over twenty years but wasn't allowed to speak.

On Sunday, the Bengals got it going in the Patriots' back yard. They stumbled terribly out of the gate and looked totally lost in the first half. Hopefully, the 38-24 thumping is a wake-up-call. Things are never quite as good, or as bad, as they seem.

Around the NFL, It looks like UC grad Conner Barwin broke his ankle in Houston's win over Indianapolis and may be out for the season. UC grad and home town boy Brent Celek continued his great receiving numbers for a tight end even without Donovan McNabb. Defensive tackle #99 Mike Wright of the Patriots probably enjoyed beating the Bengals as much as anyone. He went to Purcell Marion High School and played his college ball at UC. Ex-Bearcat Mardy Gilyard had a 34 yard kickoff return for the Rams in their 17-13 loss to Arizona.
