CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Reds started the week needing one win to clinch the Central Division championship. Before a near full house at GABP, they knocked off the Astros 3-2 with a ninth inning walk-off home run off the bat of Jay Bruce. Then, the real fun began. Like those who I have watched on TV over the years from Oakland and LA, my wife and I went right out and turned over a couple of cars and set a police car on fire when they came to investigate. We also busted in a few shop windows and got ourselves a new TV.

On Wednesday, the Reds fielded a minor league team behind Johnny Cueto and they lost 2-0. The next night, the first team had recovered from Tuesday's celebration and clobbered the Astros 9-1. Drew Stubbs, Jonny Gomes and Brandon Phillips all homered. Bronson Arroyo picked up his 17th win of the season. He has, by far, the best pitching record by a Red in the last decade.

On Thursday, it was announced that the telephone number for Feed the Children on the Ochocinco cereal boxes was actually a sex line and Kroger pulled all unsold boxes from their stores. The phone number is now disconnected.

Milwaukee came to town on Friday for the final series of the season. Travis Wood pitched well but the game went to "extras" and Brandon Phillips booted a ball. This rarity sunk our boys 4-3.

Friday Night Lights:

Fenwick (6-0) over Roger Bacon (5-1) 55-28.

Colerain (1) over Lakota East 49-17

Indianapolis Cathedral over Moeller (2) 35-10

Middletown (3) over Sycamore 38-12

LaSalle (4) over Walsh Jesuit 38-13

Anderson (5) over Loveland 43-17

On Saturday, the Reds laid into the Brewers. Jay Bruce homered twice and Corky Miller once in a 7-4 win. On Sunday afternoon, the Reds played the final game of the regular season. After the game it was announced that Edinson Volquez will pitch the post season opener. Bronson Arroyo will go next and Johnny Cueto will follow.

The Bengals were in dreary Cleveland on Sunday afternoon hoping to find an offense lost for so long. They found the offense and rolled up a ton of yards but they turned the ball over and let a field goal attempt be blocked and lost 23-20. Turn over advantage is the leading indicator of winning. TO had a big day for the fantasy fans with over 200 yards receiving. The team is still poor in the 'red zone.' Next week Tampa Bay comes to town.

The Reds finished the regular season with a 3-2 win over the Brewers. Jay Bruce homered for the fourth time in the series. Aaron Harang probably pitched for the last time with Cincinnati. The Reds ended up with a 91-71 season record, five games ahead of the Cards. Not until the Giants and Padres finished did they know who or where they would play in the NLDS. They open in Philly on Wednesday...best of five...two games there and then they come to GABP. Joey Votto should be named the National League's Most Valuable Player.
