The Reds had three players win Golden Glove awards as the best fielders at their position in the National League: Brandon Phillips at second base, Scott Roland at third base and Bronson Arroyo as pitcher.
After losing their second of two preseason games to division II Bellarmine College, Xavier opened their regular season play on Friday night at home against Western Michigan of the MAC. After a quick start, the Musketeers fell into the trap of shooting the 3-ball all the time. WMU would not allow the ball to go inside and led Xavier most of the game by 6 to 8 points. In the end, XU survived 68-65. It was not real pretty. They need to hang in there until the injured get well.
Friday (and Saturday) night lights.
Division I playoffs: St X (6) over Colerain (1) 24-23
Division II playoffs: Kings over Mt. Healthy 35-28
Division III playoffs: McNicholas over Roger Bacon 31-14 (Div IV Fenwick beat them both)
Division IV playoffs: Coldwater over Badin 13-7
UC's football team played West Virginia in Morgantown on Saturday afternoon. Again they got off to a terrible start and managed a field goal in the last seconds of the first half to trail 30-3. It was u-g-l-y. The final was 37-10 and on the bus ride home the coaches were probably checking their contracts for buy out clauses.
FENWICK girls volleyball won the State championship for the first time in school history. They beat Gilmour Academy 3-1 to take the title. Division I Ursuline lost in the finals to Columbus Coffman.
The Bengals played their usual close game on Sunday. They let the Colts have 17 quick points and then the defense started to play. Carson wasn't real sharp but started to get the job done. The only three times he hit receivers right between the numbers they were wearing blue shirts. Another bungled opportunity lost. Final Indianapolis 23 Cincinnati 17. Check the pressure in the basketballs. It's time to hit the hardwood.
