RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

MNF

It began in 1970.  Until then, pro football games had only been played on Sunday.  Its hard to explain how big Monday Night Football was in the 1970's and 80's.

The network, ABC at the time, took a big risk by pre-empting their prime time weekday programming for most of a night.  All games started at 9 pm.  It was a surprise success.  Viewership increased steadily into the middle 1980's.  It helped make the NFL the number one sport in the country.  The games are now carried by ESPN and are among the most watched on cable/satellite TV.

For many years, I spent every Monday night during the season at our local watering hole watching the game - the place was packed.  I attended Monday night games here in Cincinnati and one in Cleveland against the Browns.  The energy in the stadium is very much greater than an average in-season game.  Now, its lost some of its luster for me - but, I guess, that's just because I'm getting old.
