RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

SEPTEMBER 16

On this date in 1959, the Xerox Company introduced on TV its first plain paper copy machine, the model 914.  It was a miracle in its time.  I worked in fairly successful small businesses beginning in 1968 and never had a plain paper copy machine in our office until about 1980.  (We never dreamed of a FAX machine.)

All letter writing was done on a typewriter with carbon paper copies.  Invoices were also done by typewriter; we used sets of carbonless copy paper manufactured by NCR in Dayton.  The typewriter was manual and you had to hit the keys firmly to get a decent copy at the back of the 4-copy paper set.

I did the company's accounting for some years in the 1970's.  I had a big ledger book in which I hand wrote every transaction.

In the 1980's, people were extremely worried about technology taking away people jobs.  It doesn't happen.
