On this date in 1978, the Jonestown massacre occurred.  You can read my account of that event in my entry of this date in 2007.  I urge you to do that.

On this date in 1961, President John F. Kennedy sent 18,000 military "advisors" to South Vietnam.   And so began our trek down a path that led us into a brutal war which ended without satisfaction and changed our country forever.  The war was intended to stop the growth of Communism into Southeast Asia - it did not.
