SAVING MR. BANKS

On Christmas afternoon, we went to the theater to see American Hustle but it was sold out when we arrived shortly before showtime.  We opted for Saving Mr. Banks - another Tom Hanks project.  Hanks played Walt Disney in his efforts to get the novel Mary Poppins adapted for the screen in 1961.  Emma Thompson plays the author, P.L. Travers, who demands inexplicable restrictions in exchange for her permission to proceed.

Hanks does his usual good job and will receive some recognition but this is not an award winning part.  Thompson's character is over-the-top exaggerated for the sake of the story as far as I'm concerned but some may like it.

The show has its light spots with the usual 'American versus British' humor.  The finished product uses flashbacks to the author's hidden early life as explanation for her current obstinate personality.

I would call it a good movie and one worth seeing but not a "can't miss" creation.  On the other hand, some of the audience thought it was so good that they applauded at the end - what do I know.?
