This is a very important day in the calendar year - a very important date in the calendar.
Julius Caesar introduced his new improved version of the calendar in 45 BC. That far back, they realized that it took the Earth 365 days and six hours to circle the Sun. Something had to be done about that six hours. Caesar introduced leap year. He picked February 24 as the Leap Day. This day lasted 48 hours.
Many empires and nations have their own but most of the world aligned to this Julian calendar. It was replaced by the Gregorian Calendar in 1582 and has been the most widely used version ever since. Of course, we now add February 29 in leap years.
There are still some vestiges of the February 24th leap day. Not until 1996 did the European Union and the Catholic Church begin to use the calendar with the 29th of February in leap years. Amazing!
