We really have a thing for the number seven. I'm not quite sure why.
There are seven continents - supposedly. We all learned that in school and I assume they still teach it that way. Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica ( by most conventions). The big island of Australia is the smallest and Asia the largest. Evidently, Antarctica has land mass and the Arctic does not. Greenland is part of North America, I find. I never knew that one. Who decided that Europe and Asia are different continents? The land mass of these two looks like one. I think whoever decided all this must have started with the proposition that there had to be seven. What is it with the number seven?
There are seven seas - supposedly. I'm not sure if they teach this in school. Historically, to 'sail the seven seas' was to sail everywhere on Earth. Well, I guess it just had to be seven. There are actually more that 100 bodies of water we call 'seas.' As for oceans, there are only five: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Southern. What is it with the number seven?
Everyone knows there are 10 Commandments. So, why are there only seven deadly sins? Most lists include pride, lust, sloth, gluttony, envy, greed and wrath. Is this a stretch or should there be more? What is it with the number seven?
Why seven days in a week? Of course, it is written in Genesis that it took God six days to create everything and on the seventh day He rested. Who do they think they are kidding? God needed rest? Someone made up this story thousands of years ago and that's where we get the seven day week? I think we could stand a few more days stuck in there. What if we had two Saturdays and two Sundays in each week. Nine days a week. Two weekends every week! Or, what if we threw out Monday and Tuesday so that there were only five days a week? Only three work days a week!!
Let's start a movement. Give some of the other numbers a chance to be famous. What do you say?
