On this date in the year 493, St. Patrick died. Well, maybe. No one is quite sure about the years he lived or died. 493 is a best guess by most scholars.
In the modern Irish language, the name is Padraig. You often hear the nickname of Paddy.
There are dozens of legends surrounding the patron saint of Ireland. So many that some think there may have been two Patricks doing similar things in those times.
It is an Irish tradition to have a wake after the death of a relative or friend. (A wake is a drunken revelry to many an Irishman.) For some, this wake for Patrick has been going on for over 1,500 years non-stop. Today is just the day the rest of the world joins in.
Well, lift one for me! Be safe.
