Today is World Tuberculosis Day. On this date we commemorate the discovery in 1882, by Dr. Robert Koch at the University of Berlin, the tuberculosis bacillus.
This disease is foreign to many of us because it is rarely seen in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The rest of the world, especially Africa and Asia, is being ravaged by its attack.
It is a disease that usually strikes the lungs. Coughing, sweating, fever and fatigue are the typical symptoms. It can become incapacitating. The disease is passed from an infected person by coughing or sneezing. A third of the world's population may be infected.
Not only are we blessed with enormous resources in our great country, but we are protected by our advanced sanitation and medical practices from one of the world's worst scourges. Be thankful and cover up when you cough or sneeze!
